Independently owned and operated

The Bird in Hand is an exceptional find, as it is one of only a few remaining independently owned pubs in this part of the world. The pub owner is a seasoned player in the hospitality domain who, as entrepreneur, owned and successfully ran no less than 14 pubs during his career in this industry.

With him unifying his wealth of experience into The Bird in Hand, patrons can expect an exceptional destination with a variety of tones and settings. It has a strong focus on tradition, a fresh approach towards modern-day trends and requirements, and even a touch of the unusual. At the same time, it remains true to what it has been from the outset – a social space for the community, and a reflection of the Saltford village spirit where residents know and care for one another, and enjoy being together in what has become their own happy place!

Traditional, but with a pleasing twist!

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This age-old wisdom is especially true for The Bird in Hand where we do not tamper with success. This includes our hard-earned tradition of perfection which comes from a timeless charm of more than 200 years, and a base of loyal customers who favour and expect a traditional ring to their village inn experience.

But, we also cater for those who prefer something different, something new! For this we’ve introduced a stylish touch to our décor, extended our pub to also include an informal dining area, and – the ultimate – created a remarkable restaurant to provide in the village need for a dining retreat. And all of this under one roof!

Serving the good stuff

As an independently owned pub, we are not prescribed in terms of the liquor we serve, as it typically happens with brewery-owned entities. We therefore have the freedom to support our local, small breweries, and to have as suppliers other West Country breweries with their variety of traditional British ales, and who pride themselves on the rich brewing heritage of the area, their regional identity, and their true craftmanship.

As for our menu, our head chef Jason Deason only uses the best and freshest ingredients which he sources locally, where possible. Our pub menu includes those special picks of comfort food we became known for, as well as favourites not many can prepare themselves, or prefer not to make at home. Conservatory patrons can look forward to choosing from a menu tailored for the discerning diner. We also host themed gourmet evenings – for example game night with duck, pheasant, and rabbit, or fish night with a selection of fresh fish.

Something for everyone

The Bird in Hand is a destination for all. We enjoy the vibe when we provide for the tastes and requirements of our regular daily crowd, we love the interaction with cyclists and others when they stop for refreshments en route between Bristol and Bath, and we delight in seeing familiar faces and getting acquainted with new clientele when they frequent our newly created restaurant facility.

But The Bird in Hand is not only about our patrons, it is also about us a pub owners. The Bird in Hand is the culmination of our dreams, our ambition and our knowhow. It is our fantasy fulfilled to create a prime village inn destination, to ensure our patrons enjoy only the best, and to give Saltford that special place where its residents and visitors can come home to!
